    Previously known as the Neuro-Biogenic Amines. In addition to understanding the production and metabolism of neurotransmitters and their metabolites, the NeuroBasic Profile test may provide functional information about the enzymes catechol-o-methyltransferase (COMT) and monoamine oxidase (MAO). It can help identify imbalances that may correlate with neurological conditions and can also support therapeutic interventions because certain amines can be altered by precursors such as 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). Alterations in urinary neurotransmitter status may result from a variety of conditions including metabolic disorders, mood/behavioural disorders, environmental exposures or (rarely) the presence of certain tumours. Evaluation of neurotransmitters may provide increased clarity about a patient's health and functional status.
