Description
Clostridium is a diverse genus of bacteria, many of which are abundant and normal inhabitants of the gastrointestinal tract. Beneficial effects on metabolic and gastrointestinal health include the breakdown of polysaccharides, saccharolytic fermentation of carbohydrates to short chain fatty acids and regulation of immune function. However, some produce toxins that may cause botulism, food poisoning, gas gangrene and tetanus while others have been associated with neuro-development disorders including autism. This test offers a specialised anaerobic culture optimised for clostridium and can detect nearly 40 beneficial and pathogenic species including C.botulinium, C.tentani, C,perfringens as well as C.difficile that is often present in healthy individuals but can be associated with antiobiotic resistant diarrhoea. If C.difficile is cultured at any level the sample is automatically tested for all known toxigenic strains using FDA-cleared molecular diagnostic DNA assay at no additional charge. This profile is indicated for antibiotic resistant diarrhoea and neuro-developmental disorders.
